Starting on my series..

For the final two terms of this year, we had to write a statement of intent, planning a series on a theme that interested us. My ‘after Wolf Kahn’ paintings had inspired me to start on those paintings of Europe I have struggled to paint. The first is “Elterwater’ pictured here (not a great pic so will try again, tried but no better – will wait until I figure what I am doing wrong) and I am astonished at how this one turned out. I’m trying to convey my feelings on visiting Europe for the first time in winter. I … Continue reading Starting on my series..

Wolf Kahn and Friesach

After completing the Te Uku painting and getting so inspired, I wanted to do another painting ‘after Wolf Kahn’. Inspired by his ‘Deep Purple Barn’, I completed this painting of a building in the village of Friesach, Austria. The photo I took of this had scaffolding all over it, and other stuff, but I was fascinated by the windows. Windows and doors seem to be creeping into all my paintings lately, not sure why – just intrigued by their mystery I think. This painting was sold in 2007. Continue reading Wolf Kahn and Friesach

Wolf Kahn and Te Uke

One of the exercises from our course which really worked for me – picking an artist we liked, researching him/her and producing a painting as if we had had a conversation with him/her. I chose Wolf Kahn whose paintings I loved for their vibrant colour. My result was ‘Te Uku’ pictured here (now in the collection of Helen Findlater, Thames, New Zealand). After the research I had decided I didn’t admire Kahn as much as I had before. But this exercise made me think about my painting, it taught me a lot and started me on my current series, although you … Continue reading Wolf Kahn and Te Uke

I worked on my ‘The Thames’ painting and it is pretty much finished, something doesn’t quite work for me though yet. I spent more time on this painting today, scratching away at the windows, and something has moved forward a bit. Much happier that I have achieved it’s purpose. In class, I also did some more prepatory work on ‘Castleton’ and ‘Clerkenwell’, they may or may not fall into place. ‘Holy trinity’ still does not work in this series, although I have now painted it twice. The second painting is good, but something is not right, it doesn’t sing or … Continue reading #27

This week I took my nearly finished but not quite there painting, ‘Holy Trinity’, and bravely scractched out a ray of light, taking it back to the orange underpainting and whitre canvas. This worked very well, or as well as this painting will do for me. I also worked further on ‘Castleton’, putting down the first layer of colour. We took a walking trip to a nearby gallery, Two Rooms, viewing work by Jane Harris, Marcia Haff, Alexia Harding, Basil Beattie, Luise Fong, Murray Green and Bill Riley. The Jane Harris fascinated most people, and I liked one of the … Continue reading #26
