Barcelona barcelona

On our second day in Barcelona we headed to the beach after eating some disgusting churros and hot chocolate for breakfast – should never have gone to the tourist cafe! But the beach was something else again. Jampacked and as opposed to Brighton, not many people had clothes on. In fact most women were topless. G-string bikinis no matter how old and whatever shape – all sexy. We did think about a Dalgety topless foursome pic… Hawkers galore for everything – massage, beer, sunglasses, sunscreen, icecream. And an arrest for taking illicit photos of topless women. But the water was … Continue reading Barcelona barcelona

Barcelona – It was the first time that we met

My niece invited me to Barcelona for the weekend and of course I said yes. I’d never been to Spain before so even a little taste would be good. In the end, three Dalgety girls and one ring-in indulged themselves in the warmth, sun, food and drink of Barcelona. Only for two short days so we took a hop-on hop-off city tour in an open-top double-decker bus on the first day to see what we could see… The first stop of the morning took us up Montjuic and ooh an art gallery, and the other girls wanted to get off too! … Continue reading Barcelona – It was the first time that we met

The past is the only dead thing that smells sweet.

While in the countryside near Stratford-UponAvon, I walked for hours with my camera, taking images of this land I have a fascination with. There is something about the history in this land which I keep trying to capture. My current paintings have no buildings or people in them, and I remove or leave out man-made objects like fences and telegraph poles or buildings. I’m not quite sure why but its something about trying to capture the feeling that this land with all its history, the layers of history, gives to me. Imagining all the thousands of years of people living … Continue reading The past is the only dead thing that smells sweet.

Trying to steal a little of the light and heat

I am sure you can appreciate how hard it is for an artist to get their work seen. This is just our attempt to try and steal a little of the light and heat that the Auckland Art Fair will generate. We hope you can make the opening on Tuesday August 2nd from 5.30pm – 9pm at 22 McColl St. Newmarket, or stop by and say hello any time from August 1st until the 14th. If you know of anyone that may be interested or can help spread the word, please pass this on. Sincerely, Chris Dennis (& Karley Feaver). … Continue reading Trying to steal a little of the light and heat

How many kinds of sweet flowers grow In an English country garden?

Very close to where I was near Stratford Upon Avon was a garden I wanted to see after catching a documentary about it when I first arrived. A fascinating family history. Mrs Gertrude Winthrop purchased the Hidcote Manor Estate in 1907 and her son soon became interested in turning the fields around the house into a garden. Perfectly described on the National Trust website: ‘The twisting lanes of the Cotswold countryside lead to one of the most inventive and influential gardens of the 20th century. Hidcote Manor Garden, with its structure of outdoor ‘rooms’, linked by vistas and furnished with … Continue reading How many kinds of sweet flowers grow In an English country garden?

In Shakespeare country and the country…

Leaving the seaside I travelled up to the middle and stayed for a week in a converted cottage close to Stratford Upon Avon, just near two thatched cottage villages on the banks of the River Avon. Internet access was up and down, frustrating for work but I managed, but fabulous to be in the English countryside while the sun is shining. Soft and sunny. Almost every day I walked into Stratford along the Stratford Greenway, a 3 1/2 mile walk accross country. And started to finally take photos for my research.  I took quite a few and started a series … Continue reading In Shakespeare country and the country…

By the English seaside…

A short train ride away from London and I am by the sea. I’ve come down for an appointment but thought I would check out as much as I could and stayed a few days. I also wanted to check out Lawrence Art Supplies in Hove too – see if they are as good as the boys at Studio Art Supplies in Auckland. Spied some Derwent Graphitint Pencils which I will treat myself to. The seaside here is just not like back home. It’s different. There is shopping. And the streets and stores are very crowded on a very sunny … Continue reading By the English seaside…

Back on track and back tracking… CURRENT in London

I have to back track a little as I haven’t written for awhile – internet access and all sorts disrupting the flow. Catching up since I last wrote – CURRENT: Contemporary Art from New Zealand and the Pacific 23rd June – 30th July 2011 at October Gallery in London. I went to the opening at the October Gallery in Bloomsbury as part of City of London Festival 2011 with this year’s theme Arts and Culture of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Current showcases six contemporary artists from New Zealand and the Pacific: Andy Leleisi’uao, Nic Moon, Virginia King, … Continue reading Back on track and back tracking… CURRENT in London
