The evening slowly starts…

A new painting finished – watercolour on board, as yet untitled. But it comes from Whitby in England. Over the weekend I also went to the World Press Photography exhibition – international current affairs photography from around the globe. It was definitely not uplifting, it made you sad, even cry, about man’s inhumanity to fellow man. How can they? It made you glad, very glad, to live in New Zealand. But the photography is amazing. It’s finished now though – you will need to catch it somewhere else in the world. After that I went back to the Gow Langsford … Continue reading The evening slowly starts…

An evening with Nigel Brown and John Pule…

Yesterday I ventured out on a clear, cold night to see the latest artwork of these two great New Zealand artists, John Pule and Nigel Brown. Nigel Brown was showing at Whitespace in Ponsonby with an exhibition called ‘Joe Taihape‘ – on until 28 July. Most of the paintings are large and full of colour with strong black, and in one case orange, outlines. You can read more about on the origins of Joe Taihape on the Whitespace website.  My favourite work was the exhibition’s smaller namesake painting ‘Joe Taihape’ pictured below, with its references to Dylan, Clairmont and Manitas … Continue reading An evening with Nigel Brown and John Pule…

John Pule, artist – KERMADEC, nine artists explore the South Pacific

John Pule has three large works in this exhibition. Two of these large paintings vividly depict the volcanic nature of Raoul Island using oil and varnish. Its depicted as dark, lush and continually rumbling.  Pule has managed to portray a molten, volcanic feel to the land. Springing from the soil is the lush fantastical tropical plant life. ‘The Great World’ also has a tropical looking bird-like creature. In ‘The Other Country’ the plants are so lush they grow stongly off the top of the canvas. In these works John Pule uses a limited palette of black ink and oil. The … Continue reading John Pule, artist – KERMADEC, nine artists explore the South Pacific

KERMADEC – nine artists explore the South Pacific

I have volunteered to work at a great exhibition at the Maritime Museum over the next few months  – Kermadec showcases a diverse collection of artworks from nine leading South Pacific artists inspired by their voyage to the Kermadec region of New Zealand in May 2011. Made especially relevant by the Rena disaster on the Astrolabe Reef at the end of the Kermadec Trench, just after the artists had returned to New Zealand. The artists were Niuean-born John Pule, painter John Reynolds, inter-media artist Phil Dadson, leading Australian sculptor/installation artist Fiona Hall, Wellington-based sculptor Elizabeth Thomson, one of New Zealand’s … Continue reading KERMADEC – nine artists explore the South Pacific

Working through and viewing art

Hopefully I am working through my ‘down’ time, and something good will come out the other end. Meanwhile Amy and I went visiting city centre galleries on Friday, always good. Firstly, we ventured into The Lane Gallery and Hana Carpenter – this was unexpected and excellent, so much meaning in each painting, so much in there. Secondly Elizabeth Rees at the Milford Gallery – I wanted to see her because her work reminds me of mine! We also enjoyed that one, especially the large canvases. Then we ventured into the small Tim Melville Gallery and saw a very amusing exhibition … Continue reading Working through and viewing art
