Plot with Kathryn Stevens at Whitespace

Kathryn Stevens’ work is an ongoing exploration of the construction of space and our understanding or reading of it. Our perception of space is a process through which we become aware of our environment and our relative position in the world. We physically and imaginatively construct spaces, perhaps altering their function, and, in doing so, contain them. Are we just attempting to locate ourselves? In this exhibition Stevens explores the boundary between the two dimensional plane and the three dimensional object. The paintings, now surfaces that float out from the wall, both acknowledge and utilise pictorial space. Yet there is … Continue reading Plot with Kathryn Stevens at Whitespace

Auckland Art Fair 09

Auckland Art Fair 09 returns to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour from May 1-3. Amy, Sue and I have booked to hear the keynote speaker on Friday 1st May: The curious economics of contemporary art. Included in our ticket is admission to the Art Fair so it will be a … Continue reading Auckland Art Fair 09

Kathryn Stevens, Viewfinder

On Tuesday 5th I went to an opening for Kathryn Stevens at the Bath Street Gallery – Kathryn is one of my tutors at ArtStation this year. I am blown away by Kathryn’s work, I’m not sure I can put it into words. I’ve included one of the works here for you to see. It is something to do with the depth of them, as if you are looking from another world or on high. All of our class arrived at the opening, which was a great turnout from us without any planning! Personally, I had been thinking about painting … Continue reading Kathryn Stevens, Viewfinder

Painter’s Studio Started

A great first day. Two tutors to take us through the year, Kathryn Stevens and Matthew Browne. Two new students into our group, one from Switzerland. Matthew and Kathryn gave us a presentation of their work, both very different, and where it comes from, why they paint. A few blind drawing exercises to get us back into the swing of things again, and then a small presentation from each of us.  Surprisingly, everyone was quite nervous! I will carry on with the history paintings and see where that develops. I also want to learn to evaluate my own paintings and … Continue reading Painter’s Studio Started
