A day in Norwich…

Walking into Norwich from University of East Anglia (UEA) takes about 40 mins – this is what you can see on the way. And Amy MacKinnon, Sue Thomas and I have secured space for a weekend pop-up exhibition of our new work in Grey Lynn for May24-25.  Great news and more details to come as we get them confirmed. Old Norwich…

This is what the gorgeous city of Norwich looks like. I stayed just outside Norwich for a time, in Kirby Bedon, so I am really enjoying the girls updates of sights and sounds. Lots of lanes with no cars, plenty of  pubs with good food and coffee, antique shops with untransportable breakables, tea houses  and tons of churches, two huge cathedrals – one for the Catholics – Cathedral of St John the Baptist, and one for the opposition – Norwich Cathedral, a medieval castle and lots more. The imposing Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist stands at one … Continue reading Old Norwich…

Henry Moore close by…

My friends, C & G, have settled into their University accommodation – with a view of what looks like laboratories but facing north so a joy to see the sun – the sun sets at 4.00pm and rises late BUT… … a big plus is that The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is two minutes walk away with a cafe and a Henry Moore sculpture outside. C & G have since found out that all their lectures and tutorials are in the Sainsbury Centre. A bit like the Auckland Art Gallery and just 200m away from where they are staying on campus. … Continue reading Henry Moore close by…

Oh, to be in England Now…

I haven’t been very proficient with this blog lately but a good friend has just left for a six month stint in England studying Art History at East Anglia University, Norwich. We study Art History together at Auckland University and talk often about trips to Europe looking at the art we have been studying. She has arrived in London for a few days and is about to make her way up to Norwich to start her semester of study and the snippets of her travels are starting to come through. So I thought I would follow her discoveries and update … Continue reading Oh, to be in England Now…

Wandering and walking and sweet blackberries.

I’ve been to Norwich before and wondered why I hadn’t visited the castle then. The name should have told me if I had taken any notice – inside it’s a modern building housing a museum – Anglo-Saxon and Vikings, Boudica, Eqypt and a natural history gallery. So I wandered… And found the art gallery and what a good surprise. Etchings by Rembrandt, paintings by Hogarth, Breughel the Younger, Gainsborough. A special section on the Norwich School, the first provincial art movement in Britain. Artists of the school were inspired by the natural beauty of the Norfolk landscape – artists such … Continue reading Wandering and walking and sweet blackberries.

Francis Upritchard and coincidence

I arrived at my next house-sit near Norwich to find a house full of books, art and art books. The house owners’ daughter is Kate MacGarry and is Francis Upritchard‘s representative gallery in London, with an opening on Wednesday 7th September. I’d love to go but can’t get there, but will visit when I get to London next week instead. Quite a small world knowing Francis has been staying in this house as well. Peacocks wandering around and sleeping on the deck I’m in the country now and wandering those narrow lanes taking many photographs. And some resulting little watercolours. … Continue reading Francis Upritchard and coincidence
