Peter Gibson-Smith’s exhibition and summer workshop

Just letting you know that Peter Gibson-Smith has work in the Gow Langsford “Frieze” exhibition starting Tuesday 30th November. Opening function 5 – 7 pm. Also…he’s teaching a one week summer school in January 2011. It’s the “Old School / New School : experimental painting with traditional materials” workshop, condensed into 5 full-time days from Wednesday 5th – Sunday 9th January. It covers traditional gesso, egg tempera, encaustic, a bit of vinyl cutting and lots more. Four watercolours and a new class..

A good day in the studio yesterday although getting hailed on and drenched walking there was uncomfortable. I had to dry myself with a towel covered in old paint and charcoal, lovely! And then try and dry items of clothing one by one on a tiny studio heater. But I managed four small watercolours before I thought I better dash again in between huge black clouds and showers. These belong to the Kaiaua theme I have been working on for a few months. “Buried”, Peter Gibson-Smith at Bath Street Gallery, Parnell

This exhibition opened last night – fantastic. The large works are pencil and encaustic on paper construction, extremely detailed and thought-out.  Very hard to show you with an image – I think you need to see them. Most of the works are made up of two or more panels with  images pencilled onto paper, and covered with an encaustic wax method. The panels have a curved end to resemble paper unrolled. I may have some of the technicalities incorrect but the result is stunning.
