Goodbye to Antalya

Up early and a very short walk to catch the incoming fishing boats in Finike harbour – they were late coming in so we left Mustafa to buy the fish for dinner. He bought loads of silver fish about 6-8 inches long – anchovies! While he was busy preparing his feast for dinner, we took the sisters fishing to Pirates Beach, where they sat happily on a rock, one with a hand line, and caught a pile of very small schnapper. In New Zealand we would thrown them back, but the young juicy fish are the prized ones for their … Continue reading Goodbye to Antalya

Arykanda and Finike

Arykanda is a unique Lycian city, built upon five large terraces ascending a mountain slope, and was known for having the most pleasure and entertainment-loving (and debt-ridden) citizens. The city overlooks a magnificent valley and the views are spectacular. The site is under continuous excavation,  unearthing a beautiful city, well-organized with the look of an architectural model – including baths, a running track, agora, and an amphitheatre in excellent condition (in which Aysun had attended a Sting concert some years ago). We were the only ones here and we sat here amongst the ruins and ate sweet Turkish peaches and … Continue reading Arykanda and Finike

Olympos, the Chimaera and Kahve Falı

We visited the valley and town of Olympos on the southern coast of Turkey, 90 km southwest of Antalya. Olympos is still a secluded village in a national park, and now a town of tourist ‘tree-houses’ and backpackers in summer. The coins of the city of Olympos date back to the 2nd century BC. It was … Continue reading Olympos, the Chimaera and Kahve Falı

Turkland, Turkey, Türkiye

A short trip to Turkey, thanks to cheap airfares, to meet with some friends from New Zealand. Aysun is from Turkey – what a wonderful invite it turned out to be! I flew into Antalya but was collected and driven to the town of Finike, 90 minutes west. This peninsula has been settled since 3000 BC although on the coast nothing has been uncovered dating before 2000 BC. So its old! Finike is a quiet district (about 10,000 people) where people buzz around on mopeds going about their daily lives. The port of Finike is now a yacht marina, and … Continue reading Turkland, Turkey, Türkiye
