Oh, to be in England Now…

I haven’t been very proficient with this blog lately but a good friend has just left for a six month stint in England studying Art History at East Anglia University, Norwich. We study Art History together at Auckland University and talk often about trips to Europe looking at the art we have been studying. She has arrived in London for a few days and is about to make her way up to Norwich to start her semester of study and the snippets of her travels are starting to come through. So I thought I would follow her discoveries and update … Continue reading Oh, to be in England Now…

Don Binney at Old Government House

At my college in Hamilton, there was a Don Binney bird painting in the corridor and I’ve never forgotten it.  Tonight I was lucky to be invited to the opening of an exhibition of Don Binney’s works from The University of Auckland collection. Don Binney was there and spoke eloquently and entertainingly about his work of which he was rightly proud. And he was also delighted to see some works – one he hadn’t seen since 1963 and had no idea it was in the University’s collection. Another work was called Requiem, a painting with no bird, in honour of … Continue reading Don Binney at Old Government House

Art since Antiquity

I have just enrolled for my next Art History paper at Auckland University, and I can’t wait for March to come round. It’s called ‘Images and Ideas: Art since Antiquity’. And it is a ‘survey of art periods that have been the foundation of western art and architecture. It provides knowledge of important art developments across the ages in their socio-historical context, including periods such as ancient and medieval art. The course also offers the close study of some key works which will be studied in detail. These studies will range across different periods and disciplines, including the Great Sphinx … Continue reading Art since Antiquity

A university student again and Matthew Browne…

I am now officially enrolled for a BA in Art History at Auckland University. I would dearly love to do a BFA but circumstances don’t allow that, so studying part time in Art History will be more than exciting. Start mid – July with a paper on Modern Art and Modernity, looking forward to it. I am hoping that this will add some depth to my painting and art practice.  I’ll keep you briefly informed as I go along, especially with some of the reading – I wish I had the reading list now so I could get started! I … Continue reading A university student again and Matthew Browne…

Delayed

The course has been delayed a week due to ‘unforseen circumstances’ – big disappointment. But it will start soon enough, and hopefully we get an extra day somewhere. Starting Tuesday 12th February 9.00 to 3pm – my busiest day at work so will have to sort that for the rest of the year. But now the delay allows me to meet with the organising committee for the exhibition at Old Government House on Tuesday 5th. A lunch with them and the other two artists. And hopefuly that exhibition date is early so I can put everything into my course. I … Continue reading Delayed

Painter’s Studio 2008

I have been accepted for the Artstation Painter’s Studio course for 2008 – two tutors to look after us for the year. Fantastic, very excited. Our group exhibition went very well for Painter’s Progress – I had three paintings selected and sold two of them – mind blowing and very exciting! I sold ‘Friesach’ and ‘Castleton’. ‘Castleton’ is a newer painting featured here: I have been reading a set of novels by Bernard Cornwell, and love the use of the Old English names. As my latest or current series of paintngs is trying to portray the levels of history found in … Continue reading Painter’s Studio 2008
