Winter Painting School With Matthew Browne

Fri 29, Sat 30 June & Sun 1 July 10.00am – 4.00pm daily: $310 This winter workshop is a great opportunity for an intense period of observational study and offers three days of drawing and painting from the nude figure. Working directly from the unclothed figure, course participants will initially be introduced to ‘seeing’ the figure by direct observation and critical analysis. Formal issues of line, tone, structure, form and space will be addressed through drawing and an emphasis on hand and eye co-‐ordination. Developments towards painting and the exploration of an individual and expressive response to the figure will … Continue reading Winter Painting School With Matthew Browne

A university student again and Matthew Browne…

I am now officially enrolled for a BA in Art History at Auckland University. I would dearly love to do a BFA but circumstances don’t allow that, so studying part time in Art History will be more than exciting. Start mid – July with a paper on Modern Art and Modernity, looking forward to it. I am hoping that this will add some depth to my painting and art practice.  I’ll keep you briefly informed as I go along, especially with some of the reading – I wish I had the reading list now so I could get started! I … Continue reading A university student again and Matthew Browne…

Trust the Process

‘Errors are harbingers of original ideas because they introduce new directions for expression.’ So starts the chapter on ‘mistakes and distortions’ by Shaun McNiff called ‘Trust the Process – An Artist’s Way to Letting Go’.  This book is very easy to read through although I have only read this chapter and one on ‘The Many Ways of Creating’ so far. It’s all good so far. ‘The Many Ways of Creating’ emphasises that artists/creative people come in all forms and ways of life – you don’t have to be a solitary artists in an isolated spot to be creative. I’m going … Continue reading Trust the Process

New paintings and studio space

I’ve finished two new paintings and very pleased with both of them. The smaller one, Hauptallee, is pictured here and I’ll have the other image for you soon. One is of the Hauptallee in The Prater in Vienna, and the other of the North York Moors.  I’ve really enjoying painting these, trying to capture the atmosphere, the feeling of being in these two places and their memories, their oldness, their years of history. Both have snow in them too, I love the cold and the snow.  I’ve used oil paint with Rapid medium, with layers and layers of transparent colour, … Continue reading New paintings and studio space

Painter’s Studio Started

A great first day. Two tutors to take us through the year, Kathryn Stevens and Matthew Browne. Two new students into our group, one from Switzerland. Matthew and Kathryn gave us a presentation of their work, both very different, and where it comes from, why they paint. A few blind drawing exercises to get us back into the swing of things again, and then a small presentation from each of us.  Surprisingly, everyone was quite nervous! I will carry on with the history paintings and see where that develops. I also want to learn to evaluate my own paintings and … Continue reading Painter’s Studio Started
